If you have ever had to deal with a severe allergy, then you know how scary it can be. How isolated it can make you feel. Particularly when you are first learning of it, and haven’t yet learned all the ways that it can be hidden in every day products that you had come to rely on. In 2010, we learned just how extensively pervasive what I am allergic to is; finding it in everything from processed foods to hygiene products, cleaning chemicals to perfumes.

After lots of research, we discovered that the chemical derivatives from coconut and palm plants number in the hundreds, and that these chemicals and byproducts can be found everywhere. Some of them are obvious, like coconut fat, palm kernel oil, or palmitic acid. But some of them are not quite so obvious, like cetyl alcohol, stearic acid, or tocopherols. The more we learned of the forms that these derivatives frequently take, the more we realized how few options are available on the consumer market for basic necessities, and in the case of soaps, how there were no options available.

After months of searching, we came to the realization that if we were going to have a hope of finding soap we could use, we would either need to look oversees, or learn to make it ourselves, so we thought, “Why not? Let’s learn a new skill.” And thus began our foray into the world of soap-making.

After several years of trial and error, and more math than we care to admit, we finally developed a stable formula that met our specific needs. More importantly, as friends and family came over and tried the soap, we began to get requests to make soap for them. A bar or two extra here and there slowly grew in frequency, and eventually, people began offering to buy it. Once we started getting requests to buy it, we knew we had something viable, and a very under represented community of people with a similar allergy that may be interested in our products. That is why our products are (and always will be) guaranteed to be 100% palm and coconut product free.
